About the Scholars Council

Aspiring to enhance the contribution of intellectuals in improving the social, economic and political conditions of the Amhara region people and Amhara people in Ethiopia, the Scholars Council was established in 2011 E.C. (2019 G.C) by the Amhara Regional State Council, proclamation number 268/2019. The Council is organized along seven clusters:  Agriculture and Environment; Culture, History, and Tourism; Democracy, Governance and Justice; Education; Finance and Economy Health; and Industry, Urban Development and Technology. Each cluster intends to contribute in developing the institutional and human capacity of the region’s different offices and bureaus through research, consultation, and capacity development.

As an independent and autonomous entity, the Council serves as a focal point and platform for collaborative and coordinated intellectual engagements irrespective of political differences.  The Council also intends to contribute to build a strong democratic country where people across all over the country are allowed to have the right to live without any discrimination and segregation.  The Council proposes evidence based solutions drawn from critical scientific studies and reflections of our context. The Council firmly believes our society’s intricate problems can be solved through research, deliberations, debates, and negotiations. It intends to nurture scientific and evidence based decision making.

The Council has no affiliation to any political party and works with full autonomy and integrity. The Council cultivates social responsibility, commitment, and accountability to the causes of our people. The Council promotes collaborative and constructive engagement with decision makers, political leaders, and different actors. The Council envisages to be state of the art institution whose actions and positions are informed through evidence and public causes.
